Fiji is one runway and a boat to everywhere else.
Which day cruise actually stops long enough to snorkel. What an afternoon in the Sabeto mud pools costs. Whether the Coral Coast repays the drive down from Nadi. Reviews of every tour you can book in Fiji.
The four days a first week in Fiji gets built around.
What each one costs, how long it takes and who it suits.
01The first day outCruisin Fiji: Authentic Fijian Day Cruise – Best Day in FijiA full day on the water out of Port Denarau, with lunch and the snorkelling gear on board. The day almost every first-timer books.
02The river dayRiver Tubing Fiji, Navua RiverA rubber ring down the Navua, waterfalls off the bank and lunch in a village upriver. The wettest you will get with your clothes on.
03The eveningCultural Night TourKava passed round the mat, a meke, and fire on the sand after dinner. An hour that explains most of what you saw all day.
04The half day inlandCFC Hot Spring Mud Pool,Garden Of Sleeping Giant And Village Visit Half Day TourHot mud at Sabeto, a rinse in the sulphur pool, then orchids at the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
In Fiji the good day starts at Port Denarau.
Catamarans to a sandbar you can walk round in ten minutes, a bar moored over the reef with nothing under it but blue, and a dinner boat that turns for home as the light goes. Three kinds of day on the water, and what it costs to board each one.
Nadi for the boats, the Coral Coast for the reef, Suva for the rest of the country.
Almost everybody lands at Nadi and a lot of people never leave the western side, which is not the mistake it sounds like: the marina, the mud pools and the island day clubs are all there. The Coral Coast and the capital are each a different country.
Fiji’s most popular days out.

What a day out in Fiji actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by what it costs a head. Fiji is not a cheap country to play in, and the gap between a half day and a whole one is smaller than you would expect.
Nadi’s other half is hot mud, orchids and a temple.
The strip between the airport and the hills holds the Sabeto mud pools, an orchid garden an American actor planted at the foot of the Sleeping Giant, and the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere. Most of it fits into one morning, and you can be back at the pool by two.
Three things that only happen in Fiji.
Reefs and beach clubs run right across the Pacific. A kava bowl passed round a mat, a waterfall a village owns, and a cave a chief has to let you into do not.

The village welcome
You are not shown round a Fijian village, you are received into one. A bundle of yaqona root goes to the chief, the kava is pounded and mixed in a tanoa, and the first bowl is drunk before anybody discusses anything else. Shoulders covered, hat off, nothing worn on your head. The courtesies are real, and a good guide runs through them on the drive in.

The Biausevu waterfall
The falls sit up a river valley behind the Coral Coast, and the path in crosses the water a dozen times, so it is a day for shoes you do not mind soaking. The village at the trailhead owns the waterfall and receives you before you walk. After heavy rain the pool runs brown and the crossings get serious, which is worth asking about before you commit to the drive.

The Naihehe cave
A limestone chamber a long way up the Sigatoka river, with a priest’s platform and a ritual oven still standing inside it. Getting in means a low ledge and wading, a guide from the village at the mouth leads every group, and the river has the final say: rain upstream shuts the crossing for days at a time.

Four Fijian bookings that will not wait.
Most of a week here can be arranged from a lounger the night before. These four run on boat timetables, capped platforms and a stage that is not lit every night.
- 01Day Trip to Cloud 9 Floating Platform Including Food and BeveragesOne boat out, one boat back, and a platform that holds only so many people. In season the day passes go well before the week does.
- 02Malamala Beach Club – Full DayThe island caps its numbers to keep the day club civil, and the catamaran leaves Port Denarau to a fixed timetable.
- 03VOU Fiji Shows: Fiji Untold, From Fiji With Love & More! Dinner! The show runs on set nights rather than every night, and the seats that come with dinner are counted.
- 04Naihehe Cave Safari in Sigatoka with BBQ LunchThe cave belongs to the village and your guide arranges the permission. Rain upstream closes the river crossing for days.
Fiji’s wet season is an afternoon problem, not a whole-day one.
The rain tends to arrive after lunch and be gone by dinner. Put the boats and the reef in the morning, and keep the caves, the stage shows, the Nadi markets and the hot pools in reserve for the hours it comes down. Mud and sulphur are the one plan rain cannot spoil.
